AP English Language and Composition

About the Class

AP Language and Composition is a full year, elective English class open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  The course is designed as a rigorous study of language and composition and follows the curricular requirements described in the AP English Course Description published by the College Board.

Unlike most required English classes offered at MHS, the majority of the readings in AP Language will be non-fiction.  Through close reading of the texts, students will gain an understanding of the elements of language and how writers utilize these elements to create art and to persuade an audience.

In conjunction with the comprehensive reading selections, students will have the opportunity to engage in all aspects of the writing process from drafting, to revising, to publishing.  The course will require in-class, timed writings as well as polished essays.  Students will work one-on-one with the instructor as well as with peers to improve writing skills. Feedback will be provided in a variety of manners including through individual conferencing and writing workshops.

Who should take this course?

If you earned a grade of B or better in Honors English 9, Honors English 10, or Honors English 11, you should consider continuing your academic career with AP Language and Composition.

If you were not enrolled in Honors English 9, Honors English 10, or Honors English 11 last year, but discovered during the course of the year that you would prefer a more challenging English class, you should also consider enrolling in AP Language and Composition.

The course is not closed to any students, but students who did not take Honors English 9, Honors English 10, or Honors English 11, or who have concerns about their preparedness for the class should schedule a meeting with one of the instructors to discuss the workload and expectations.
